UP Diliman Balay Kalinaw Dining Hall

On May 27, a year and three months after his illegal arrest, detained artist Ericson Acosta marks his 40th birthday inside the walls of the sub-provincial Jail in Calbayog City, Samar.
The Free Ericson Acosta Campaign (FEAC), in cooperation with Samahan ng mga Ex-Detainees Laban sa Detensyon at Aresto) SELDA and the All-UP Academic Employees Union, will be hold “SERVE THE PEOPLE: Lugawan para sa Kalayaan”, a fund-raising event to help sustain Acosta’s legal defense funds, at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Balay Kalinaw Dining Hall.

Please join us, his friends, family, colleagues, fellow artists and supporters, as we wish Ericson freedom from unjust detention on his 40th birthday. Fresh, hot lugaw will be served at 3pm and 6pm by fellow artists and former political detainees. Artworks, books, and crafts by political prisoners and their supporters will also be sold and auctioned at the event.

Serve the people!

This event coincides with the United Nations Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva, where the Philippines is expected to be "grilled" for its human rights record. There are more than 350 political prisoners in the country today, most of them victims of arbitrary arrests, torture and trumped-up criminal charges. More than 90 of them, including Ericson Acosta, were arrested under President Aquino's watch.
