Dear
Friends,
The
Philippine Center of the International PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Essayists,
Novelists) Writers in Prison Committee is hosting a writers’ forum and
gathering this coming November 15 to mark the Day of the Imprisoned Writer. This activity will be held from 1:30 to 3:30
in the afternoon at the University of the Philippines – Manila, College of Arts
and Sciences Little Theater, Padre Faura, Manila.
The
November 15 Day of the Imprisoned Writer
is an annual, international day intended to recognize and support
writers who resist repression of the basic human right to freedom of expression
and who stand up to attacks made against their right to impart information.
PEN
Centers all over the world will highlight cases of imprisoned writers,
including that of Filipino poet Ericson
Acosta, who has been in detention in a Samar jail for more than a year now.
Prominent writers, their institutions, unions and organizations from all other
the country, have likewise pledged to participate in the November 15 activities
and actions.
In
this light, we invite you and your organization to join us in the writers’
forum. We hope that you can share your thoughts on freedom of expression and
human rights with our literary community on this very important day.
For
details and inquiries, please contact Prof. Rommel Rodriguez (Ph.D.) at 09154832742.
BIENVENIDO LUMBERA
